The White Rose East Asia Centre is very active in international academic exchange with the rest of the world. Scholars and students routinely go abroad for study, research, and teaching.
Both WREAC universities have numerous exchange agreements with leading universities in East Asia. They cooperate with major Chinese universities through the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) and with Japanese Universities such as the University of Tokyo, the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ) in Tokyo or universities in Kyoto and other regions of Japan on an individual basis.
WREAC's main European partner institutions are combined in the EastAsiaNet network of universities and WREAC academics routinely teach at universities within the network funded by the Erasmus programme whereas academics from Germany, Spain, Italy, France, and the Netherlands come to teach in Sheffield or Leeds. PhD students are also able to benefit from funding for study and research in Europe. WREAC academics are active in the European Association of Japanese Studies, the European Association of Chinese Studies, and the European Korean Studies Association.
With several WREAC academics having obtained their doctorate from universities in the United States and Australia there is an unusually strong interest in scholarly cooperation with these English-speaking regions. One of the joint activities is a specialised joint doctoral students' training workshop, with professors participating from American universities such as Harvard and Hawaii. Through the WUN network, we also have close cooperation with the Universities of Sydney and Alberta.
