Language Tech: PowerWord Lite

Kingsoft PowerWord Lite can be used to lookup Chinese on-the-fly in most applications. It is bundled here with the excellent Google pinyin-based IME.

Free software from Google and Kingsoft proves excellent aid to Chinese language study and input.

Google and Kingsoft jointly released a free software package for Windows last year combining two superlative Chinese-language tools - the Google Pinyin IME and a 'lite' version of Kingsoft's Chinese-English-Chinese desktop reference and study software, PowerWord.  This article by Ben Caesar on Chinese study technology has been written for the Association for Speakers of Chinese as a Second Language (ASCSL).

While 'Grabber' is a wonderful tool that makes navigation of Chinese sites possible for me, it has a major weakness that the offered English words are given in alphabetical order. This means that obscure, and often archaic, words come before commonly used words, which I suspect is the reason for some of the bizarre translations from Chinese into English we see. I appreciate that marking words with a popularity index would be an enormous task!
By the way, Thank you to Ben Caesar for this site, and this series of pages; installation has been so much easier when you don't have to guess what all the Chinese means!

Thank you thank you! I can't believe my luck in finding your article! I speak Mandarin with no problems, but reading has always been a HUGE problem for me. Your article really explained step by step what I need to do and how to use this piece of software. Thanks a lot for doing this!

Best Christmas and New Year wishes to you,

Greg
