China Global: Nation State and Ethnicity

21 - 24 July 2009, University of Oslo, Norway

Financed by the European Union Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses and in collaboration with the Worldwide University Network (WUN), the 2009 Postgraduate Research Summer School was organised with the University of Oslo and held from 21 to 24 July 2009 in Oslo. It aimed to enhance the research approaches and techniques of postgraduate research students and junior researchers.

The theme of the 2009 Postgraduate Summer School was China Global: Nation State and Ethnicity. The main topics included:
  • China, its minority nationalities and Greater China;
  • Theories of nation and ethnicity, and Chinese discourses of nation, ethnicity, and the foreign;
  • Cultural interpretations of social belonging.

Required Readings and Training Materials

All participants were required to prepare in advance for the programme. This meant completing the required readings before training sessions began. The reading lists are available here.


One of the funding requirements of the European Union Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses is that the organisers submit project and financial reports for each year. The reports for PGSS 2009 can be downloaded here.
