Chinese Development: ECARDC 9Page 1 of 3
Ninth European Conference on Agriculture and Rural Development in China - presentations now availableOverviewThe conference, with the theme 'Rethinking Urban-Rural Interactions in China's Agricultural Development: Beyond the Urban Bias?' was held at the University of Leeds from 3-5 April 2009. Over 60 participants from the UK, Europe, China, Japan, Australia and North America participated. The conference was jointly sponsored by the Worldwide University Network (WUN); the Ford Foundation, China; National Institute of Chinese Studies, White Rose East Asia Centre; and the University of Leeds. The conference debated the opportunities and challenges faced by Chinese agriculture and rural development today. Following 30 years of reform with huge growth and unprecedented social changes, including the rural-urban exodus of 200 million people, rural industrialisation, and the emergence of new social divisions, Chinese authorities are now seeking new directions for development in large-scale experiments focusing on urban-rural integration. The conference highlighted themes including agricultural policy, the impact and trajectory of urbanisation, land issues, food security, rural-urban migration, social welfare and anti-poverty efforts, livelihood, climate change and the environment, as well as the institutional responses to risks under the impact of globalisation. Keynote speakers were Prof. Norman Long (Wageningen University, The Netherlands), Prof. Jonathan Unger Director of the Contemporary China Centre, Australia National University and Prof. Ye Xingqing of China Agricultural University and Director of the Department of Rural Economy, Research Office of the State Council, PR China. The Conference programme is given later in this article. PDF versions of presentations are available in most cases. Papers are also available where indicated.
