Postgraduate Research Summer School 2009

China Global: Nation State and Ethnicity

21 - 24 July 2009, University of Oslo, Norway

Financed by the European Union Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses and in collaboration with the Worldwide University Network (WUN), the 2009 Postgraduate Research Summer School was organised with the University of Oslo and held from 21 to 24 July 2009 in Oslo. It aimed to enhance the research approaches and techniques of postgraduate research students and junior researchers.

The theme of the 2009 Postgraduate Summer School was China Global: Nation State and Ethnicity. The main topics included:

  • China, its minority nationalities and Greater China;
  • Theories of nation and ethnicity, and Chinese discourses of nation, ethnicity, and the foreign;
  • Cultural interpretations of social belonging.

Required Readings and Training Materials

All participants were required to prepare in advance for the programme. This meant completing the required readings before training sessions began. The readings are available for download here.

Reporting

One of the funding requirements of the European Union Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses is that the organisers submit project and financial reports for each year. The reports for PGSS 2009 will be available for download shortly from here.

Background

Participants were studying for a PhD or an equivalent research degree, or junior researchers holding at least a BA in Humanities or Social Sciences with more than four years of research experience in contemporary Chinese studies and relevant disciplines. All participants had a good command of English - the language of instruction of the Summer School - and Chinese.

Discussion at PGSS 2009

Applications were invited from:

  • Postgraduate students and junior researchers who are European nationals, i.e. the nationals of EU member or associated states, who are studying or working anywhere in the world;
  • Postgraduate students and junior researchers of any nationality who are studying or working at a European university or institute;
  • Postgraduate students and junior researchers studying or working at Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) member universities - Nanjing (China), Zhejiang (China), Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (US), California at San Diego (US), Washington at Seattle (US), Wisconsin-Madison (US), Alberta (CA), Western Australia (AU) and Sydney (AU).

Postgraduates, post-docs and junior researchers at other institutions were also considered.

The maximum number of 40 fully-funded places were allocated according to a quota based on European and non-European categories, and 10 self-funded places were taken up.

Student presentation PGSS 2009

All funded participants were provided with accommodation, subsistence, and training material, and a contribution to the cost of travel. Self-funded participants paid a participation fee of €172.50 (or the currency equivalent in US$ or GBP), in addition to their travel and accommodation costs.
