On 23 February 2013, WREAC held the 'Japanese Cinema Revisited' workshop in collaboration with Meiji Gakuin University, Tokyo Japan.

Organised by the Research Institute of Language and Culture at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo and the Mixed Cinema Network, University of Leeds, and supported by the White Rose East Asia Centre, the workshop focused on Japanese cinema and the work of the late director Nagisa Oshima, in particular. Professor Geoffrey Nowell-Smith (Queen Mary University of London) gave the keynote address Oshima Under Western Eyes.

Presentations were also given by Professor Lucia Nagib (University of Leeds), Dr Mika Ko (Rikkyo University), Professor Ayako Saito (Meiji Gakuin University) and WREAC Mixed Cinema Network PhD student Michael Smith (University of Leeds), as well as other distinguished scholars of Japanese cinema.
