2008.10.14 - Opinion: Michael Arthur on NICS

An important pillar in the university’s strategy to sustain international excellence.

Professor Michael Arthur is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds.

The University of Leeds is proud to host the White Rose East Asia Centre and the National Institute of Chinese Studies (NICS). The Centre forms an important pillar in the university’s strategy to join the top 50 universities in the world. This strategy centres on providing frontier research, outstanding knowledge transfer to the local community and world-class education. The prestigious joint funding by the ESRC, AHRC and HEFCE has allowed us, in alliance with University of Sheffield, to establish a Centre which is delivering on all of these fronts. Under the umbrella of WREAC, NICS builds upon the successful alliance the Centre of International Business and East Asia Studies Leeds have had for some years now and extends it intelligently with the capacities at East Asian Studies Sheffield to transform the North of England into an academic powerhouse with respect to Asia-related research. NICS combines the complementary strength of the internationally distinguished areas of research in international business and Chinese studies at the University of Leeds.

The excellent track-record in research activities, knowledge transfer and education of the involved partners, their new scholars and the supporting infrastructure we provide, ensure that the WREAC and NICS will achieve their full potential and achieve international excellence at the very highest level.
