The Tokyo International Conference of African Development: Japan's attempts to Reinvent the Development of Africa

(Please note that participation in this Workshop is by invitation only)

17.Feb.2009 09.00
University House - Leeds

The workshop aspires to bring together British, Japanese and African researchers and policymakers with an interest in the TICAD to speak to the multiplicity of Japan's initiatives in Africa since the early 1990s. It aims to focus essentially on the fundamental issues in Japan's expanding role in Africa, and the relevant policy coordinates in what is clearly a Japan-led initiative to ‘reinvent' the development of Africa. We aim to do so without necessarily overemphasizing Japanese exceptionalism in the current discourse about the development of Africa; at the same time we seek to affirm (by articulating) the central role that Japan occupies in the unfolding multilateral engagements with Africa.
