Wolfram Manzenreiter is associated with the Department of East Asian Studies at Vienna University where he teaches modern Japanese society. His research is mostly concerned with social and anthropological aspects of sports, popular culture, technology and labour in a globalising world. As visiting professor, he has been invited to universities in France, Germany, Japan and Turkey. He is acting president of the German Association of Social Science Research on Japan (VSJF). In 2008, he has been nominated to the Advisory Editorial Board of Leisure Studies and the Extended Board of the International Sport Sociology Association. He is author of several books and articles on popular culture, leisure and sport in Japan. Recent publications include the co-edited volumes The Sociology of Mega-Events (Blackwell 2006) and Football Goes East. Business, Culture and the People’s Game in East Asia (Routledge 2004).
