DescriptionWhite Rose East Asia Centre Distinguished LectureThe Enemy at the Gate: The North Korean Nuclear Issue and Nationalism in Contemporary JapanProfessor Tessa Morris-Suzuki, Australia National UniversityTessa Morris-Suzuki is Professor of Japanese history in the College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University, and currently (December 2009 to April 2010) Visiting Fellow in the Interdisciplinary Institute of Information Studies, University of Tokyo. Her research focuses on questions of borders, migration and national identity in Japan; issues of historical conflict and reconciliation between Japan and its Asian neighbours; and the role of grass-roots social movements in Japan’s recent history. Her publications include The Past Within Us: Media, Memory, History, (Verso, 2005); Exodus to North Korea: Shadows from Japan’s Cold War (Rowman and Littlefield, 2007) (both of these books also published in Japanese and Korean translation); Tenno to Amerika (“The Emperor and America”, Shûiesha Shinsho 2010, co-authored with Yoshimi Shunya) and Borderline Japan: Foreigners and Frontier Controls in the Postwar Era (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2010 CommentatorsDr James Babb, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne Dr Nicola Liscutin, Birkbeck College, University of London ChairProfessor Glenn D.
