Description
WREAC will co-host the sixth East Asian Social Policy international conference together with the East Asian Social Policy research network (EASP). The conference will be held at the University of Sheffield from 3rd to 4th July 2009.
The main theme is 'Global economic crisis and welfare restructuring in East Asia'. East Asian countries and communities currently face (or expect to face) new social challenges by unprecedented scale of global economic crisis in decades. The effect of this current crisis could be more significant in East Asia which already experienced a range of problems in society along with globalisation and post-industrialisation ever intensified since Asian financial crisis at the end of the 1990s. This includes not only problems in conventional social policy areas such as unemployment, inequality and poverty, family breakdown, and aging society, but also, possibly, new wave of transformation of society. The conference will address a range of issues relating to these challenges in East Asia, identify future research agenda and discuss the role of social policy.
